What a treat! We ate at D’Anna’s Cafe Italiano for lunch today and left with huge smiles and happy waves to Patti. Who’s Patti? She’s the BAKER, man! And D’anna’s is open until 10pm – a definite late night stop for goodies.
D’Anna’s makes its pastas, sauces and desserts from scratch. If you only know what pasta (not noodles) from a box tastes like, then you are in for a reality check. Let me just say this: boxed pasta is to wonder bread what D’Anna’s pasta is to baked home made bread.
Our server was very friendly and professional; a true pleasure. The restaurant was bright and airy with earthy colors throughout. There is a lunch, dinner and kid’s menu along with specials offered – much to choose from: soups and salads, Italian sandwiches, pasta dishes, traditional meat and fish entrees and DESSERTS to die for.
I ate the spinach rigatoni (as long as my thumb) with meat sauce. Fresh and delicious. It was preceded by a green salad with Italian vinaigrette served with sicilian bread. The kid ate a huge bowl of spaghetti marinara with relish (happiness, not spread). And Tom enjoyed chard and sausage ravioli with a meat sauce – it was fantastic (he always shares).
Our server asked, ‘Did we enjoy our meal and would there be anything else?‘ Well, I nodded my head vigorously and she did a double take. Her face lit up and this then brings me to Patti and her desserts. She told us she was the dessert baker.
She completed our meal with the ultimate in cheesecakes. I ate the apple torte cheesecake special for the day: cheesecake with a beautifully patterned apple topping. I also sampled some of Tom’s chocolate caramel nut torte – a signature dessert. Bittersweet chocolate topped with creamy caramel and a mix of cashew pecan almond walnut and peanuts. The kid said ‘YUM!’
It’s a good thing to be friends with Bellingham’s dessert bakers…
