Bellingham Farmer’s Market

Saturday’s would be lazy days in my house if it wasn’t for the lure of the Farmer’s Market downtown. Suffice it to say, an invitation to accompany me is never turned down. The Bellingham Farmer’s Market gives my children visions of root beer floats from Mallard’s Ice Cream and nutella filled Ralf’s Bavarian Pretzels.

I look forward to all the food I can sample and I buy our green staples while I’m at it. I also have the bonus of 3 bag carriers. This allows for hands free eating! I was delighted to find the fish tacos from Fairhaven Bay Seafoods. The cod is fresh grilled and wrapped with cabbage (my favorite) and lots of yummy extras. Down and around the corner from them was Shahrazad’s Persian food. The smell of the lamb stew/soup was luscious. I was a bit full of taco, so my partner obliged by ordering some soup to share. It was thick and rich with small chunks of potato and vegetables. Excellent. We were sampling the last batch for the season. It is traditionally a cold weather soup (how apropos for Bellingham) and continuing to make it would seem to want to stretch the season…wouldn’t want that, now would we.

We stopped eating long enough to watch the fire juggling act. I kept pulling the kids back lest they meet with mishap. If you haven’t seen this man, you should — from a distance. His grand finale involves setting a scythe (sÄ«th) blade aflame and balancing the end of the handle on his chin. Amazing. My Mother has a four inch scar on her shin from a scythe she used in the fields on the family farm in Bate, Hungary. As I said, from a distance.

Moving down the aisle, behind the Kettle Korn (not to be missed), was a new booth: Las Margaritas. No, not drinks. Two gents and ladies were serving organic traditional Mexican food. I ordered 1 bean tostada and it tasted fresh and delicious. I spread some homemade salsa on top and added a little fresh pickled cucumber salad. Very good. They provide catering now, but hope to expand in the future.

Time for dessert. Chocolate. Mount Bakery Cafe & Creperie is THE best. I have eagerly eaten breakfasts and lunches in the restaurant and now I could have more at the Market. I bought a chocolate brioche which was divine. It made donuts peasant food (not that I look down on peasant food). I shared because I was full. Not because I love anyone, even though I do.

Calico Cupboard in Mount Vernon Washington

We’re looking to add to the family. NO, not more children; a dog. We went to visit the most adorable puppies on the face of the earth, doodles, in Mount Vernon. I can’t call them purebread because they’re a mix. I can’t call them mutts because their parents are purebreads. So they’re called doodles. Well, they were tons of fun and we left them to mull over which we loved the best.

We tried to decide over lunch at Calico Cupboard. I expected calico designs and cupboards of china and servers in pioneer garb, but it was simple country.

Our server was all nice and smiles and was patient while we tried to pick from the variety on the menu. To be perfectly honest, our eyes kept straying to the dessert cabinet. It reminded us of Serendipity in NYC. A place I fondly remember. My partner (pal back then) always let me get two desserts because I couldn’t decide.

We ordered kids’ mac and cheese, kids’ grilled cheese, clam chowder, beef and cabbage soup, and 2 half sandwiches (more variety, not more filling) of roast turkey and veggie avocado. And green salad. Well, the soup was perfect – too hot to eat first. Our salad was cold, crunchy and good. The soup was fresh and tasty. The roast turkey got a thumbs up from my girlfriend and my veggie avocado sandwich on thick homemade bread was great. The kids’ cheese dishes disappeared, and my sample of it was yummy.

We got dessert to go (a little pressed for time – always squeezing as much living into life we can). The kids ate monster sugar cookies in the car and I watched my girlfriend eat her pecan fudge pie with satisfaction (she shared while I drove back to Bellingham). I ate my slice after dinner later that night. It is, without doubt, one of the BEST pies I’ve ever eaten. Fresh, a little sweet, a little fudge, a little crunch. It was perfect.

Our Kitchen is Your Kitchen Bellingham

I like that phrase, don’t you? To me it means: come on in and we’ll share some eats! Yes, please.

My girlfriend and I have been waiting patiently for Our Kitchen is Your Kitchen to open. We have been duly rewarded. We tried the no bake cookies (and many others) – delicious. The tea and coffee is piping hot fresh, as it should be. And did I mention the chocolate pudding bread? Save me some, please.

They also have a baking studio I can make a mess in. They have the ingredients or I can bring my own. I think for my birthday I’m going to plan a girl’s night out party – everything chocolate. They’ll breaking down the door.

Boomers Drive-In Restaurant

It was a gorgeous day and we had to get out. Didn’t matter where. So off we went to play at Lake Padden.

The catch here is: we left the house at around 5pm. Really close to the dinner gong. No matter. We went anyway. That’s the way we are. However, by 6:30 the natives were getting restless (me) and wanted to try the other burger joint my partner went to (without me again)… Boomers Drive-in.

We could sit in the car, but chose to sit inside around the circular gas fireplace. Cozy. There were many choices on the chalkboard menu. We ordered Baby Boomers, Teriyaki Boomers, BBQ Boomers, waffle fries, onion rings (these were like MY mom’s – see post on fiamma Burger) and some chicken, too. No one complained. I know, hard to believe with three children, but there you have it.
